Cold day on the river.

IMG0008AI was expecting to spend the day double-checking spreadsheets of student grades yesterday, but a hurried email from my friend Sheila Bannerman lured me out to the river in the afternoon.

Sheila is  organizing Red Deer’s centennial celebrations and is working with three London-based artists to create a “River of Light”  this summer.

So they asked me to shepherd a 280 l plastic  prototype (complete with LED) down the river. Along the way we tested a keel and a drag to keep the barrel pointed downstream.

It was a cold day of paddling, even in a wetsuit and with both neoprene socks and booties. But I hope this trial run helped the artists refine their design fro on evening in June when 500 of these illuminated barrels will make a night-time journey down the river. And I hope to be one of the kayakers along for the ride!
